Unpack Your Way to Zen

How to unpack with ADHD

My two week trip away was AMAZING!  I felt so exhausted yet rejuvenated at the same time.  But one of the things I hate about vacations is you have to unpack.  And that for an ADHD brain is ZERO fun.

Vacations are an amazing escape, offering a break from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. But returning from a dreamy getaway can also feel like stepping back into a tornado of to-dos, especially when it's time to tackle the dreaded task of unpacking. The key to a seamless transition back into your routine? Unpacking right away. Let's dive into some tips to help you make this often-overwhelming process a breeze.

I unpacked the second I got home.  I took five mins, dumped all the clothes into laundry baskets and put the empty suitcase in the hallway to go downstairs.  I could not even walk around them, I would have to pick them up to move them.

So when I got up the morning after my trip, on my way downstairs, I took one of the suitcases with me. The suitcases live in the garage (at least that’s the plan!)

It felt good, at least one was away.  That was enough of a start to make me want to finish putting the suitcases away.

I decided to do something different, I decided to change it up and it worked.  I can’t guarantee that it will work on my next trip but it just might.

So here's my tips:

1. Start Small and Stay Simple:

After a relaxing vacation, the last thing you want to do is confront a mountain of luggage. Begin by unpacking the essentials. Start with toiletries, travel documents, and any items you'll need immediately. This gradual approach can help ease you back into the groove.

2. Divide and Conquer:

ADHD women often thrive with structure. Create designated spaces for each type of item as you unpack. For example, use separate areas for clothing, toiletries, and souvenirs. This minimizes the chaos and makes everything more accessible.

3. Set a Timer:

Embrace your ADHD superpower of hyperfocus. Set a timer for a specific task, like unpacking a suitcase or sorting through laundry. When you hyperfocus for a short time, you can accomplish more than you'd think.

4. Unpack Mindfully:

Make the unpacking process an opportunity for mindfulness. Reflect on the memories you created during your trip while you put away your belongings. It can make the process more enjoyable.

5. Prioritize:

If laundry is the first thing, start there.  Need your toiletries, go there first.  Want to show off those souvenirs you bought, share those.

6. Use Visual Cues:

Incorporate visual cues, such as checklists or post-it notes, to keep you on track. These tools can serve as reminders and help you stay organized during the unpacking process.

7. Reward Yourself:

Tackling the task of unpacking right away is a big achievement. Reward yourself with a treat, whether it's a favorite snack, a cup of tea, or a relaxing bath. Positive reinforcement can make the process more enjoyable and motivate you to unpack immediately in the future.

Unpacking right after a vacation may not be the most exciting part of your travel experience, but it can significantly reduce post-trip stress and help you smoothly transition back into your daily routine. As an ADHD woman, you have the superpower of adaptability, and by using these strategies, you can make unpacking an easier and more manageable process. So, the next time you return from a trip, don't let the luggage linger. Unpack your way to Zen, and enjoy the peace of mind it brings.

What will you do differently after your next trip to unpack?

Now, where should I plan my next vacation too?
